The Student Government Association (SGA) at Alabama State University is setting the stage for a transformative academic year. Vice President Kameelah Freeman shared insights on their vision, goals and upcoming initiatives, all designed to enhance student life.
At the heart of the Legacy Administration’s mission is a commitment to enriching the student experience at the university.
“We want to focus on leaving a legacy of enhancing student life for students,” Freeman said. “Each member of the executive Cabinet is contributing to this mission through their own personal initiatives, ensuring that the administration’s efforts are multifaceted and impactful.”
To boost campus life and student engagement, SGA plans to “collaborate closely with the University Programs and Activities Board (UPAB)” and various registered student organizations.
“We want to ensure that campus life exudes true ‘Ole Bama State spirit,” Freeman said. “These collaborations will bring a variety of events and programs to life, aimed at fostering a vibrant and inclusive campus environment where every student feels connected.”
One of the significant initiatives this year is the revision of the SGA constitution. Freeman emphasized the need for this update, explaining that “the current SGA constitution does not reflect the way the current SGA operates.”
“We are looking to update and enhance the constitution so that it can be more effectively used,” Freeman said. “These changes are expected to align the constitution with the current needs and operations of the SGA, making it a more functional governing document.”
In addition to their focus on student engagement and governance, the Legacy administration is also advocating for improvements of campus facilities and services.
“We are actively working to advocate for various campus improvement projects,” Freeman said. While acknowledging that the administration cannot control the pace of these projects, she assured that they are “working diligently to ensure that students’ voices are heard by the university’s administration.”
Freeman also highlighted the importance of student involvement of campus organizations, which plays a crucial role when shaping student life.
“We encourage students to join any club or organization that they are passionate about,” she said. “With nearly 100 registered student organizations on campus, there is no shortage of opportunities for students to explore their interests and develop leadership skills. We want all of our students to take that step to become student leaders by joining different clubs and organizations.”
For those looking to get more involved in the governance and activities at the university, SGA offers numerous opportunities.
“There are many opportunities to be involved with SGA, from freshman interns to the media team to the different branches,” Freeman shared. “The SGA is actively seeking student leaders who are eager to contribute to the campus community and help drive the administration’s initiatives forward.”
As the Legacy Administration moves forward with its plans, Freeman emphasized that “the pursuit of excellence is at the core of everything we do.”
“We plan to embody the spirit of excellence by holding ourselves, the entire administration and administrators to that standard,” she said. “The administration is committed to ensuring that excellence is not just a goal but a standard that is reflected in all aspects of our work and the campus community.”
