Alabama State University is working to better serve active military, veterans and their families. For students who are currently active in the military, dependents of active military, as well as students who have served in the military or members of their families, the university appointed new leadership in the Office of Veterans and Military Affairs.
N’Keya Boone, who previously worked in the Office of Student Accounts as a senior accounts receivable accountant, is the new director of the Office of Veterans and Military Affairs. An Alabama State University alumna, Boone has worked for the university since 2019.
In her new role, Boone works with approximately 207 veterans and active military. She also oversees the certifying officer and together, they work with active-duty students, military dependents, veterans and military benefits. In addition, they post 9/11 benefits, vocational rehabilitation benefits and G.I. Bills.
According to Boone, once veterans are approved for the bill, they come in, and the office inputs their schedule information so the veterans can make sure they receive their funds for either tuition or housing.
“I feel like I have worked hard, you know, and I feel like I have done a lot and deserve to reward myself by moving up,” Boone said.
Boone wants to leave an impact for veterans as well as active military.
“I want to be the director that works for the students and makes an impact as far as taking care of the veterans or their needs and benefits and just being resourceful to them.”
