As Alabama State University prepares for its much-anticipated Homecoming celebration, details have been released on how students and organizations can participate in the annual Homecoming Parade.
Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff Candace Davis provided an overview for students who are interested in participating in the parade.
“Students will need to get with Mr. Etheridge (Jason Etheridge, M.Ed., director of Student Life) about registering for the parade,” Davis explained. “Outside organizations, including community bands and businesses, can sign up via a QR code and link that was sent out by the university. The deadline for submitting parade applications is Sept. 16, 2024.”
There are specific criteria participants must adhere to in order to participate in the Homecoming parade. All participants must pay a fee, whether they are student organizations or outside groups.
“You must be an active organization on campus to be eligible to participate in the parade,” Davis said. “Outside organizations must pay the $40 homecoming parade fee. The $40 registration fee is for everyone!” She emphasized.
While the parade promises a lively and spirited atmosphere, Davis said there are rules in place to ensure safety.
“There is no candy to be thrown out,” marking a key restriction for parade participants,” Davis said. “However, there are no limitations on float designs, themes or performances, allowing participants to get creative.”
Davis also shared details about the parade route and staging areas.
“The parade will start on the corner of South Jackson Street and North University Drive, by Lockhart Gym and Council Hall,” she said. From there, the route will turn right onto Harris Way, next turn onto campus by the Acadome and McGinity Apartments, go through campus and exit near Jo Ann Robinson Residence Hall. Staging areas for participants will be located at Lockhart, Council Hall, Tuscaloosa Street and Hutchinson Street.”
Ensuring safety is a top priority for everyone during the parade, Davis explained the specific regulations participants need to adhere to.
“A safety waiver was sent to all participants, and they must sign the waiver to participate,” Davis said. “The university will enforce this requirement for all parade participants to minimize risks.”
While the university is committed to organizing the parade, Davis confirmed that the university will not offer workshops or assistance for participants.
When asked if the university would provide resources for float construction or performance preparation, her response was simple: “No.”
In the event of inclement weather, the parade will proceed with few exceptions.
“No, the parade will not be rescheduled, the parade will go on as scheduled unless there is a tornado or hurricane,” Davis stated. “Even if it rains, the parade will still take place.”
With the registration deadline fast approaching, those interested are encouraged to act quickly to ensure their participation in one of the university’s traditions.
