The Alabama State University community will find the ballroom flooring in the John Garrick Hardy Center a bit louder when walking on it as it recently underwent a significant upgrade with the installation of new laminate flooring on Nov. 4, a project that had been in the works for over a year and a half.
“We’re so excited about the new flooring, we’ve been waiting over a year and a half to do this!” said Orion Dubose, event coordinator and building manager for the student center.
The renovations included replacing the carpet in the ballroom and the second-floor area near the cashier’s office. Dubose highlighted the transformation’s positive impact on the building’s appearance and functionality.
“We’ve had three events since the flooring was replaced, and all the constituents have said it’s such a drastic change and they love the change of color to the floor,” he said. “The aesthetics overall look so much better.”
Dubose emphasized the importance of creating a refreshed look.
“We wanted to bring a new look to these areas. We are not only internal but we service those who are external,” Dubose said. “Meaning that we have external constituents that come and book the ballroom for their events,” he explained.
The decision to upgrade came after years of heavy use which took a toll on the previous carpeting.
“After seven to 10 years of wear and tear on the carpet, it looked atrocious. So we thought it was time for an upgrade,” Dubose said.
The project cost approximately $10,000 and made a noticeable difference in the appearance of the ballroom. Dubose believes the investment was well worth it, given the positive feedback from those who have used the updated spaces.
