Despite the Alabama State University Hornets and Jackson State University Tigers 16-10 fight on the gridiron, and the Tigers winning the contest to secure the Southwestern Athletic Conference East title, nothing could prepare the fans for what occurred immediately after the game on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Both teams began fighting which appeared to move from the 40-yard line to the endzone. Tensions were high throughout Saturday’s game, as there were a combined 13 penalties, with some coming from personal fouls.
Shortly after the game, both teams can be seen “mouthing” at each other as both team coaches tried to separate them. Players began getting into one another’s faces and started to shove one another, which led to pulling helmets. Tensions eventually boiled over, and players began swinging at each other and shoving each other, some to the ground.
After finally separating the players, the Jackson State players could be seen taunting the home crowd.
Alabama State University President Quinton T. Ross Jr., Ed.D., released a statement regarding the post-game altercation.
“This behavior does not reflect the values, standards, or rich legacy of our esteemed institution,” Ross added. “The University is currently conducting a thorough review of the incident and will take appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with our policies. We thank our supporters, alumni, and stakeholders for their understanding as we address this matter. Together, we will continue to uphold the proud tradition of Alabama State University.”
This is the second consecutive week that the Hornets have been involved in an altercation, as there was action pre-game before its 24-23 loss to Grambling State University last week.
