Senior guard T.J. Madlock recorded a double-double in the Alabama State University Hornets win over the Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University Panthers 66-63 inside of the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday afternoon in a closely contested game.
Madlock scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Amar Knox and CJ Hines chipped in with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Hornets out-rebounded their opponents 40-35 in game.
Panthers point guard Braelon Bush put on a big performance with 25 points.
The Hornets played tight defense, holding the Panthers to a 37.3 shooting percentage.
The Hornets took a 7-4 lead after going on a 5-0 run which was kickstarted by a 3-pointer from Hornets guard Micah Octave.
The Hornets entered halftime on top 28-26; 16 of the Hornets 28 points came from inside the paint.
After intermission, the Hornets continued to widen its lead, constructing a 62-54 advantage.
The Hornets used a 6-0 run to grow their lead to 53-45 with 7:18 remaining.
The Panthers went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Bush’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 62-61 with 12 seconds left in the contest.
The Hornets managed to keep the lead with crucial free throws coming from Madlock and Hines in the final minutes of the game.
The Hornets improved to 8-11 and 4-2 in SWAC (Southwestern Atlantic Conference) action. They will face off against the Texas Southern University Tigers, who are 6-1 against SWAC teams, Monday night in the Acadome.
