Montgomery’s Capri Theatre reopening Nov. 27, after closing due to COVID-19 in March

Theatre will reopen with screening of ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’

Montgomery’s oldest continually operating movie theater will reopen its doors to the public on Friday, Nov. 27, after months-long shutdown due to COVID-19.

“We are cautiously re-opening in the safest manner possible,” said Capri Theatre director Martin McCaffery in a release on Friday. “We want to present an environment where everyone feels safe and welcome and can again enjoy the movie-going experience.”

The theater, operated by the nonprofit Capri Community Film Society, at 1045 E. Fairview Ave. has been closed since March.

Capri will reopen with a showing of “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” There will be screenings Friday through Monday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Along with the shortened week, the Capri will reopen with limited capacity and new safety protocols. Capri will offer temperature checks for guests and staff, increased sanitation, and it improved its ventilation and air filtering.

“Thanks to grants, loans and especially the support of the Capri Theatre membership, we have been able to pay bills and keep the theater operating while waiting to safely re-open,” said McCaffery. “These next few weeks will be a trial run to learn how best to operate in this new environment.”

New cleaning equipment and supplies have been purchased by Capri Theatre through a grant from the Central Alabama Community Foundation.

Guests are required to wear masks. The theater is also making plans for improved social distancing in the lobby and seating.

“Worldwide so far, there has not been a single COVID-19 outbreak traced back to movie theaters,” McCaffery said. “We have no intention of being the first.”

While the schedule is still being planned, Capri will present its annual screening of the 1946 film “It’s A Wonderful Life” on Dec. 18-21, sponsored by the Old Cloverdale Association. Capri will screen a new film each Friday through Dec. 18 and will then close for Christmas and New Year’s. During the break, the theater will evaluate how its reopening went and if it should continue.

“If you do not feel safe coming to the theater at this time, please stay home,” McCaffery said. “We understand. And if you do not feel well, please stay home. And if you do not want to wear a mask and follow the social distancing guidelines, please, please stay home.”
