Saturday, December 5, marks the 65th anniversary of the event that would change the course of history in America, the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

In celebration of the boycott, King’s Canvass, a local nonprofit studio/gallery, is hosting its 2nd annual BBQ & Brushes fundraiser and its Get off the Bus campaign featuring Alabama State University artist Nathaniel Allen, chair of ASU’s Department of Visual Arts. The event starts at 11 a.m. CST.

In September, Allen helped paint a mural on the side of the nonprofit gallery, located in the Washington Park community along the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. That mural will be dedicated by the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday.

“The mural is of historic significance because it depicts a timeline of the civil rights trail. The mural also welcomes visitors to the westside of Montgomery,” said Allen, who was named the 2020 AAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year.

Aside from the dedication, local artists will showcase their work, guests will hear music from a local DJ, eat delicious barbecue from the historic civil rights restaurant, Brenda’s BBQ, and much more.

“There will be between 100 to 200 people in attendance,” Allen said. “There also will be remarks by Mayor Steven L. Reed.”

The event is Mask Mandatory and social distancing will be in place.
