As part of the newly dated ‘Bama State Homecoming,’ on Oct. 3-9, headliners Moneybagg Yo and Mulatto performed at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Friday, Oct. 8, with doors opening at 7 p.m.

Students were required to follow the COVID-19 protocols of wearing face masks and socially distancing themselves. The stadium was full of eager and anxious fans waiting for Moneybagg and Mulatto. 

Moneybagg Yo is no stranger to Alabama State University, as he performed for the 2018 Homecoming Concert alongside Lil Baby.

Hyping up the crowd for the main acts, deejay Josh Hart introduced Supernard to perform his musical line-up. His presence was met with a mild reaction from the crowd as they awaited the rapper “From Da Souf.” 

Graced with loud cheers and applause from the packed venue, Mulatto made her entrance to the stage. The Atlanta, Georgia native performed several of her gold hits such as “From Da Souf,” “Muwop,” “Big Energy,” and “ In n Out.”  The students sang along throughout her entire set, filling the Dunn-Oliver Acadome with echoes of her provocative lyrics.  After an electrifying night, Mulatto went to social media praising the university, saying, “ASU showed me so much love last night I mess with y’all heavy.”

During the concert, a slight conflict arose before Moneybagg Yo was set to go onstage. Students and some attendees were granted backstage and all-access passes to be next to the stage. However, security used aggressive physical force to move members with wristbands who were already backstage across the barricade without reasoning or explanation, making some students upset and confused. 

When asked a few moments after what the reason was, security guard Williams said, “It’s Moneybagg’s security. He does not want anyone in this area except cameramen.” 

Jasmine Banks, a senior marketing major said, “I understand because DaBaby did that when he performed some years ago.” However, sophomore Ryan Baker said, “He could have explained why we had to move instead of just trying to be mean and push 20 people in the corner with no explanation.”

Moneybagg Yo made his way to the stage to the uproar of fans and students. The whole arena seemed to know his lyrics word for word, especially his smash hit “Wockesha.” Moneybagg would frequently get the crowd involved by taking selfies with students’ phones and creating a battle to see which side was louder. He would go on to perform a plethora of his hits such as “All of a Sudden,” “Time Today,” “Said Sum,”  “Go!” and “Shottas.”  Senior biology major Chrisopher Young said, “It was very entertaining. It was my first time seeing him live and I am happy ASU got him.”

 House Arrest, a student dance organization, opened the concert to the surprise of many students as their performance was not revealed until the concert.  However, their performance brought high energy and set the tone for an eventful night. House Arrest opened the show after winning the Talent Show competition during Welcome Week. Since then, the group practiced diligently and made sure to execute a performance they felt the students would enjoy.

House Arrest member Kayla Spain said, “It was an amazing experience. I am happy Alabama State let us perform and showcase what we love to do. A lot of people enjoy and look forward to us performing, so I am happy we were able to give a great show, especially for homecoming and on the same stage as Moneybagg Yo and Mulatto.” 

Students who attended the concert were equally as impressed. 

Sophomore Megan Walker, an accounting major, said, “It was fun seeing them. I enjoy every time they perform, so I was happy that I got to perform in front of the whole school and on the homecoming stage.”

University student Jay Pee The Rapper followed their set performing his song, “For The Gang.”
