Fashion Trends for the fall
November 6, 2021
As the weather begins to change in Montgomery, Alabama, so are the trendy style choices. Students at Alabama State University are already looking forward to the season of cozy, cashmere, plaid skirts and pumpkin-spice everything.
Last fall, students were more than happy to wear sweatpants and fancy pajamas while studying from home, but this year, they are eager to put together outfits that are a bit more fashion-forward as the restrictions are lifted and they slowly start incorporating more in-person classes, restaurant visits and hangouts with friends into their schedule.
As crazy as it may sound, vintage never gets old. Many students are welcoming the holiday season with a 90s revival. ‘90s fashion has been enjoying a return to the spotlight for a few years now, but this fall, the trend is going even farther with students rocking the decade’s staple looks from head to toe, rather than just using them as accent pieces. The oversized t-shirts and baggy jeans combo is a perfect unisex staple this fall.
“My favorite trend this season is oversized clothing,” said sophomore biology major Stephanie Myers. “It’s always comfortable and can also keep you really warm if you layer it just right. I’m from New York, so around this time, I would have already been wearing baggy denim bottoms with multiple layers of flannels and jackets on top. My favorite shoes to pair it with would be the classic construction Timberland boots.”
For the ladies, pair your new favorite baguette bags with sheath dresses, tall square-toe boots and maxi-length cardigans. For the 90s lover that enjoys a more alternative aesthetic, layer white T-shirts and grungy boots under silk slip dresses, pull a plaid shacket (shirt-jacket) on over skater jeans and try some cute overalls with a polo tee. When in doubt, just channel Nina Mosely from the 1997 romantic drama “Love Jones” for an earthy, neutral look.
Many students agree that the transition from summer to fall means swapping out pretty pastels and bright tropical colors for shades of navy, khaki green, burgundy and other moody hues. This season also seems to promote the layering trend as a must-have.
“Fall is the best time of year for the simple fact that you can layer your outfits,” said freshman health sciences major Jaydan Bryant. “I truly believe that the fall is the time where you can showcase the best version of yourself because, in the summer, it’s too hot to put on too much of anything. Now we can actually see who can dress. The fall brings out the sandy earth tones like nudes, tans, and olive greens. I love buying new cardigans and Ugg boots in those colors.”
However, just because the warm months are coming to an end does not mean the skin has to be put away for the rest of the year. The fall leads the way for the fleece and cotton midriff-baring sets. This summer, wrap-around strings on bare midriffs in the form of bikinis, crop tops, and midi dresses were in style. This fall, the trend is taking a simpler turn, with hints of skin peeking out between coordinating tops and midi or maxi skirts. Either go bold and show a lot of midriff or keep it subtle with just a sliver that is only visible when on the move.
Fortunately, designers are going back to the basics and blending r
egular styles with high-fashion designs. Fall is the time to put away the wedges, pumps, sandals, and flip flops. Instead, wear close-toed shoes, sneakers, and boots. Get cozy and comfortable with a pair of Uggs or other fur-lined, bulky boots.
Athletic wear can provide comfort and apparent style points for both men and women this season.
“Typically, I like to keep it simple and wear Nike leggings or Adidas joggers and jackets. It’s really hard to mess up this type of outfit, and it’s the most comfortable for me, ” said junior computer information systems major Darius Hunt.
