JOB SUMMARY

Managing Editor for Standards and Ethics/Copy Desk Chief:

The managing editor for Standards and Ethics will ensure that The Hornet Tribune does not publish errors in its online and print versions. In short, the managing editor for Standards and Ethics is the “first defense” of The Hornet Tribune, making sure a story is loaded with information, structured, written and presented in a way that is easy for the reader to follow, free of grammar, spelling and style errors. His or her responsibility is to maintain and police the newspaper’s journalistic ethics, accuracy, fairness and accountability in the face of pressures ranging from deadlines to demands to hold down costs. The managing editor for Standards, Ethics and Quality Control should be comfortable editing and reviewing content prior to publication, as well as surveillance review of published content — including social media, video, audio and images — to ensure accuracy, fairness, integrity and impartiality are adhered to across all platforms.

Deputy Copy Desk Chief:

The deputy copy desk chief will report to the managing editor for Standards, Ethics and Quality Control and will assist him or her in the supervision of the copy editors to ensure fairness, clarity, and overall quality. The deputy copy desk chief will also read the stories for grammar, style, accuracy and fairness, legal and ethical issues.

Quantitative Editor:

The quantitative editor will report to the managing editor for Standards, Ethics and Quality Control and is responsible for vetting methodological choices made by reporters and editors and sometimes partner with them on stories that require both traditional reporting and statistical analysis. The quantitative editor will double-check the accuracy of statistical and empirical claims made in stories before they are posted online.

Copy and Standards Editor:

The copy editor’s job is summarized in the Five Cs: to make the copy clear, correct, concise, comprehensible, and consistent. Copyediting involves correcting spelling, terminology, punctuation, grammatical, and semantic errors; ensuring that the typescript adheres to the publisher’s house style; and adding standardized headers, footers, headlines, and more. The copyeditor is expected to ensure that the text flows, that it is sensible, fair, and accurate, and that it will provoke no legal problems for the publisher.

Proofreader:

Proofreading is done after The Hornet Tribune is completed, but before it goes to press or is distributed. To put it simply, it’s the last step taken in the completion of the work. A proofreader’s job is to scan text for grammar, syntax, and punctuation errors. Their job focuses on the accurateness of the text and the layout in a body of work that is otherwise finished and ready to be published or distributed.
