Hornets five-game winning streak continues

The Alabama State University volleyball team continued its winning ways as they defeated the winless Bethune Cookman University 3-0. The matchup took place inside Lockhart Gymnasium, in Montgomery, Alabama on Sept. 31. The Hornets lead the all-time series 3-2.
The entire match was dominated by the Hornets, in set three senior middle blocker Kalysia Bates and junior middle blocker Jada Rhodes pushed the Hornets to a 5-1 lead early. Eventually, the Hornet lead was extended to 13-4, after senior middle blocker Mahogany Vinson landed three blocks. The Wildcats battled back, however the Hornets completed the 3-0 sweep.
Also, the Hornets tallied a total of 43 kills as a team with a .37 hit percentage, while the Wildcats only registered 17 kills on 73 total attacks. Rhodes led the Hornets with 15 total kills, followed by Bates with five total.
Junior libero Temperance Chatman made a huge impact defensively for the Hornets, as they had 11 digs with three assists. To add, junior setter Emily Brooks registered 18 assists, along with seven digs. Bates and Vinson added one solo block a piece.
In set two, Vinson sparked a 6-0 run for the Hornets. The Wildcats added two points on the board, however the Hornets went up 10-2. The dominant performance continued as the Hornets extended their lead to 15-2. Rhodes and Bates each registered four kills apiece as the Hornets won set two 25-8.
The opening set saw the Wildcats jump out to an early 6-1 advantage, until the Hornets battled back to cut the deficit to one. Two errors from the Hornets allowed the Wildcats to extend their lead to 8-5.
Vinson and Rhodes led a 6-0 Hornet run making the score 12-10 in favor of the Wildcats. Both teams found themselves knotted at 18, the Hornets went on a 7-2 run claiming the first set.
Next for the Hornets, they will take on Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Rattlers on Sunday, Oct. 2 inside Lockhart Gymnasium.
