AKAs, Sigmas triumph in annual step show

Using an Indy 500 race car theme, the sisters of the Beta Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. raced all the way to victory as they were declared the winners of the 2022 Homecoming Step Show held in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Greek paraphernalia, strolling, colored balloons and an air of excitement filled the Dunn-Oliver Acadome as various fraternities and sororities at Alabama State University competed in the annual Homecoming Step Show Oct. 6, the first in five years, and the Divine Nine did not disappoint.

The Gamma Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. won the competition against the fraternities, and the Beta Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. won the competition against the sororities.
Montaz Dennis, a senior communications major, said the step show was an entertaining and well-needed event on campus.
“The homecoming festivities have been great so far and I feel like this was the best event of the week,” he said. “It feels great to be on the winning team after working endless nights to showcase the talents that we’re blessed with. Overall, it was an amazing experience.”
Hayat Al-Ganzawy, a senior criminal justice major agrees.
“I felt that the step show was a great show,” she said. “I give it a 10 out of 10.”

Special guest host Jerrika Karlae and former Student Government Association (SGA) President David Hammond hyped the crowd up as they introduced the Divine Nine organizations. The participants included: Epsilon Beta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Beta Pi Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Upsilon Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Gamma Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
The Gamma Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. used an auto mechanic-based theme, and the Beta Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. used a race car theme.
Even though the Sigmas and the AKAs won the competition, the other participants shows generated appaluse from the audience. The Epsilon Beta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta performance was fight night themed, and the audience cheered them on as they danced and stepped across the stage.
Katelyn Baxter, a sophomore biology pre-health major was very impressed with the event. “The Greeks came and stepped,” she said. “Everyone came together in support of their organization. The AKAs and the Zetas were my favorite part of the show!”
The Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. theme was “The Ice Box Heist,” and the Gamma Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. theme was —
Although the Beta Chi Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Beta Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. did not participate this year, they were present in support of their organization as well as the others.
Malachi Williams, a senior interdisciplinary studies major, said “I definitely enjoyed the step show and all the different sororities and fraternities that participated. I do believe that the host could have been better. Other than that, I thought it was a great show.”
