Alabama State Hornets shut out Southern University Jaguars

The Alabama State University soccer team fell to the Southern University Jaguars 2-0. This matchup took place at A.W. Mumford Stadium/Pete Richardson Field in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. For the Hornets, this game extended their three-game losing streak.
The Jaguars had a strong start in the first half, junior Aniyah Clark scored their only goal before the half. The Hornets managed to get off just three shots which all coming from senior midfielder Kayleigh O’Neal.
Junior Kyra Reeves added to the Jaguar lead after a loose ball recovery, which led to a 2-0 advantage in the 89th minute. The Jaguars dominated the shot attempts recording 19 to the Hornets eight. The Jaguars had more shots on goal with eight recorded compared to the Hornets’ six as well.
Both teams finished with six saves. Hornet senior goalie Sheila Sanchez faced 19 shots, allowing two goals with two saves. Hornet freshman forward McKinley Hacker registered two shots on goal, followed by O’Neal with two. Senior midfielder Isabella Beortegui also recorded one shot on goal.
This loss ended a seven-game winning streak against the Jaguars dating back to 2012. Also, this loss dropped the Hornet’s record to (4-7-3), while the Jaguars improved their record to (6-8-1).
Hornet head coach Jodie Smith spoke on the loss.
“I feel like we did not deal with adversity well and did not create enough opportunities in the final third,” he said.
Following this loss, the Hornets opponent for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament. The Hornets, ranked no.5, will face off against the TexSouthern University Tigers Nov.5, at Alex Durley Stadium.
Next up for the Hornetss, they will take on the Alcorn State University Braves on Oct. 21, at the ASU Soccer Complex.
