Hornets finish number one in ISTAP tournament

Senior Alahana Degruy bowls a potential spare in the ISTAP tournament to close out the Hornets fall schedule.

The Alabama State University bowling team competed in the ISTAP challenge. The three day event took place in Montgomery, Alabama, at the Bowlero bowling alley from Nov. 18-20. The Hornets went 5-0 on day one.
The Hornets defeated Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (908-888), followed by a victory over Grambling State University (961-619). In their third match they defeated Tusculum College (810-766), and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) (939-803). The Hornets closed out day one with a victory over instate rival Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (878-797).
Alabama State finished no. 1 on day one scoring 4,496, followed by UAB with 4,410 pins, at no. 3 came the Alabama A&M Bulldogs with 4,177 and Tusculum was fourth with 4,166 total pins on the day.
Southern University 4,140 came in at no. 5, followed by Jackson State University 4,118 at no. 6 , Florida A&M University 3,926 at no. 7, Grambling finished last with 3,408 pins.
On day two, the Hornets fell one spot after finishing 3-2 on the day. Senior Alahana Degruy finished in no. 9 with a 182.6 average and a 913-pin total, followed by junior Savanna Razor with 903 pins and a 180.6 average.
Hornet head coach Andrew Chatman spoke of his team’s performance. He said, “I think our girls performed well amid the circumstances.” He continued, “The competition was stiff, but we continued to battle and performed well in my opinion.” Chatman proceeded with what he would like to see his team improve on, he mentioned, “The biggest thing for me is making our spares. If we make our spares we can control our own destiny.”
On the final day the Hornets swept the field and finished no. 1. The Hornets defeated the UAB Blazers (167-142), Grambling State (157-147) and Tusculum (189-155). This game concluded the Hornets fall schedule, they will continue their season at the Southwestern Athletic Conference round-up on Jan. 13-15 in D’Iberville, Mississippi.
