Prattville man charged in robbery on the campus

A Prattville man was charged with robbery, escape and possession of marijuana by Alabama State University police after he allegedly beat two men on the school’s campus Tuesday night.

Darnell Dechaun Mann, 21, remained in the Montgomery County Jail on Wednesday afternoon with a combined $26,500 bond on the four charges.

Two men reported to police that they were robbed in the 1500 block of Robert C. Hatch Drive about 7 p.m., according to Mann’s charging documents. Mann allegedly beat, kicked and threatened the two victims with a handgun before getting away with an iPhone X, valued at about $1,000, and one of the victim’s wallets.

One victim was left with a bruise to his face, according to court records.

About three hours later, officers approached Mann, who was sitting in a silver Hyundai Sonata with a woman, in the parking lot of Cynthia Alexander Apartments near West University Drive, according to records.

Mann, after being asked by an officer to show his hands, placed a .40 caliber Glock 23 handgun on the center console of the vehicle, and exited the vehicle with his hands raised.

After placing handcuffs on Mann, the officer found an iPhone X and a wallet, according to records. As the officer patted Mann down, he found a bag of marijuana, and another wallet containing identification for one of the victims in the robbery hours earlier.

“Mann blurted spontaneously that he picked the wallet and iPhone X up after they fought by the cafe,” the officer wrote in the affidavit.

Mann did not have a concealed carry permit.

The officer then returned the stolen property to the victim and took Mann to the police department headquarters on Carter Hill Road.

“While taking him out of the patrol unit to transport him in the building, Mann pulled away from this writer and fled while in handcuffs behind the building going towards Girard Street behind a residence,” the officer said referring to himself as the writer. “It was a short pursuit before this writer took Mann back into custody.”

Mann was subsequently charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree possession of marijuana, violation of licence to carry a pistol and third-degree escape.
