The Alabama State University women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss at home to Southern University with a final score being 48-33.
The Hornets struggled offensively throughout the game shooting 23.6% from the field and 14.3% from the 3-point line.
The Hornets did shoot well from the free throw line shooting 71.4% on the night.
The Southern Jaguars came out aggressively pressing immediately off the first Hornet inbound and being aggressive on defense with active hands.
The Jaguars found success in the press with guard (01) Aniya Gourdine leading the way with five steals on the game. In addition to her aggressive play on defense she was the leading scorer for the Jaguars totaling 12 points and leading them on both sides of the ball.
In addition, Jaguar center (21) Tionna Ledge had a strong outing against the Hornets scoring 10 points and four blocks.
For the Hornets guard (04) Kaitlyn Bryant was a bright spot in a game that was a struggle for the Hornets she finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Forward (01) Alanah Pooler was the second leading scorer for the Hornets putting up five points and four rebounds on a night where offensively the Hornets were out of sync.
The Hornets were aggressive on the defensive side forcing 19 turnovers against the Jaguars while also adding 10 second chance points on offensive rebounds.
The bench for the Hornets came up big in this game with the bench adding 23 points to the score total. Forward (10) O’Mariyah Tucker did bring in a team high six rebounds which helped the Hornets edge out the Jaguars on the boards 38-37.
Coming out of the half the Hornets just seemed out of sync only scoring 15 points in the second half combined.
The Hornets could not find their groove offensively and that seemed to be their downfall with only four points scored in the final quarter of play.
The visiting Jaguars on the other hand had a dominant second half scoring 16 points in the third quarter alone and continually growing their lead.
With this loss the Hornets have now fallen to 5-17 overall on the season and 3-7 in SWAC play.
The Hornets will look to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 8 in another crucial SWAC matchup against Grambling State University Tigers. The game will be live on the Hornets Sports Network at 1 p.m.
