The Alabama State University Hornets fell to the Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University Panthers on Nov. 5. The Panthers were a heavy favorite in this match, as they have only suffered one loss on the season.

The Panthers came out firing early as they were able to score three times in the opening 30 minutes of play after Savannah Powell of the Panthers gave them a 1-0 lead. At the 22nd minute, Lesa Griffin gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead after a high pass from Regan Scott. The final goal of the match came in the 29th minute when Jaiden Morgan went high on a pass from Powell.

The Hornets were outshot 12-4 by the regular-season champions, including 6-2 on goal in the contest. Junior Sheila Sanchez recorded three saves on the day for the Hornets in goal, ending the year with 90 total saves. Four different players recorded shots on the day for the Hornets, with junior Kristen Thomas and senior Mckenna Wiscombe recording shots on the goal.

Hornets’ head coach Jodie Smith spoke on the loss, “This was definitely not our day. Giving up the early goal really took us out of what we wanted to do. I am proud of our seniors and the legacy they left on our program.”

Unfortunately, this loss brought the Hornets season to a close, and the senior trio of Mckenna Wiscombe, Mary Martin Mooneyham and Janae Brown played their final game in a Hornet uniform. The Hornets were one game away from the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.
