The Alabama State University Lady Hornets volleyball team picked up wins over the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and the South Carolina University Bulldogs on Aug. 30 in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome to open up the Alabama State University Invitationals.
In the first game, the Hornets defeated the Warhawks 3-1. Middle hitter Kaylen Hines led the Lady Hornets with 11 kills. Libero Temperance Chatman was dominant defensively, with 19 digs. Outside hitter A’Nylah Cobb added on 12 digs of her own. Middle blocker Zanobia Willis had nine blocks in the contest.
The Hornets won set one 25-20. They recorded three straight aces in the opening set and registered a 31 attack percentage with 13 kills.
The Warhawks took the second set 25-18, tying the match at 1-1. The Hornets took a 2-1 after winning the third set 28-26. The Hornets came back from down 13-7 to secure the win.
The Hornets earned the match win with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set. After trailing 21-12, the Hornets fought from behind to claim the match-winning set.
The Hornets won their second game against the Bulldogs, sweeping them 3-0. Willis had another strong performance and finished with 12 kills. Hines and Cobb added 11 kills. The Hornets grabbed control early in set one to win 25-12.
The Hornets dominated the second set, maintaining a lead the entire set and winning 25-19. The Hornets completed the 3-0 sweep after winning the third set 25-20. They totaled 19 kills in the set.
