The Alabama State University Hornets suffered a loss to the University of Arizona Wildcats, getting swept 3-0 in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Sept. 5.
The Wildcats outside hitter Jaelyn Hodge led the team with 12 kills, while having a .455 hitting percentage. Middle blocker Kiari Robey contributed 10 kills with a .600 hitting percentage.
Lady Hornets middle hitter Kaylen Hines put up six kills in the losing effort. Setter Kamryn Clay put up an astonishing 12 assists along with seven digs and two aces.
Both teams traded points to start off the first set. A service error by Hornets middle blocker Temperance Chatman followed up by a kill from Hodge gave the Wildcats the 19-17 lead. The Lady Hornets tried to make a late comeback with a kill by Hines.
The Wildcats went on a 3-0 run with two kills coming from Carlie Cisneros and one kill from Jordan Wilson. The Wildcats managed to hold off the Lady Hornets and claim set one 25-20.
The Lady Hornets started off the second set strong. Outside hitter A’Nylah Cobb scored a kill after Cisneros served the ball.
Clay served the ball and the Hornets earned a point after a service ace was committed by Wildcats middle blocker Brenna Ginder.
The Wildcats held a 9-8 advantage after Cisneros recorded a kill. Afterwards, Robey blocked the ball and gave the Wildcats. The Lady Hornets had to take a timeout to regroup.
Coming out of the timeout, Lady Hornet Camille Clarke scored a service ace.
The Lady Hornets started to struggle on defense as the Wildcats began to run away with the score 19-14. Hodge and Wilson scored back to back kills
The Wildcats won set two 25-16 and went up 2-0 on the Lady Hornets with the offense hitting a match-high .517; Hodge led the way with six kills and Wilson added on four kills.
In set three, the Lady Hornets went up 3-1 after an attack error from Hodge. Lady Hornets middle blocker Zanobia Willis came up with a big block for a point.
Wilson blocked Lady Hornets outside hitter Jyriah Morgan’s shot.
The Wildcats went on a critical 4-0 run and would gain control of the set, holding a 14-9 lead.
Morgan committed an attack error giving the Wildcats a point.
The Hornets had no response as the Wildcats claimed set three 25-13; winning the match 3-0.
