The Alabama State University Hornet volleyball team fell to the The University of Alabama Tide 3-1 on Sept. 6 in The Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
The Lady Hornets came into the game 3-1 while the Tide came in undefeated 5-0.
The Tides senior outside hitter Paris Thompson had 14 kills and one block while the Tides sophomore setter Callie Kieffer had a team leading 21 assists.
Hornets sophomore middle hitter Kaylen Hines had a team leading 13 kills and four blocks. Junior setter Sierra Scanlan had a team high 16 assists.
In the first set, the Hornets opened up with a commanding victory of 25-21. The set saw a total of six lead changes and six ties. They did not let the set slip away from them, only letting the Tide take the lead 8-7.
The Hornets were defensively sound, blocking five of the Tides attacks and capitalized on the 10 errors made. The Hornets secured the first set 1-0.
To open the second set the Hornets started strong, gaining a 5-2 lead off of great offensive attacks from middle and outside hitters Kaylen Hines and A’Nylah Cobb.
Momentum changed when the Hornets lost a challenge falling behind by several points in this set.
Though falling behind the Hornets tied the set three proved to be a bit of a challenge for the Hornets with them losing this set 25-11.
Defensively, they looked out of sync to previous matches played. Nevertheless, the Hornets tried to make a great rally at the end but the deficit was too much.
The Hornets fell 2-1 after set three.
During set four, the Hornets came out strong scoring the opening point. Defensively, the Hornets looked more sound less errors were made the set was brought to within two points. The late efforts from the team made the set competitive.
Despite a strong attacking performance from the Hornets, the Tide took this set with a score of 25-19. With the Tide scoring the last 4 points to the Hornets one point.
Despite the loss, the Hornets registered a .306 attack percentage and to go along with that 13 kills in this set. Despite the valiant efforts, the Hornets lose the match 3-1.
