The Alabama State University Lady Hornets suffered a tough 0-3 home loss to the Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University Lady Panthers on Sept. 7 in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
For the Hornets, middle blocker Zanobia Willis and outside hitters Jyriah Morgan and Taylor Williams recorded eight kills. Kamrynn Clay put up 20 assists while defensive specialist Temperance Chatman continued her dominance with 13 digs while amassing 1,000 career digs Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers’ outside hitter D’Mya Hill led the team with 15 kills and nine digs for the day. Outside hitter Kylee Owens added 14 kills in the win.
The Hornets scored first when middle hitter Kaylen Hines blocked a hit. Lady Panther Iyonna Sherwood got the team on the scoreboard with a kill.
The Panthers Janyah Henderson blocked Morgan’s hit. Both teams traded kills, tying the game at 7-7.
The Hornets took a narrow 13-10 lead after outside hitter A’Nylah Cobb scored a kill. The Panther were able to take the lead back 17-16 following a kill from Hill when Hines was unable to dive for the ball before it hit the ground.
Hornet outside hitter Taylor Williams put together back-to-back plays with a kill and a service ace. The Panthers were able to hold off the Hornets to take set one 26-24.
Set two was once again a back-and-forth contest early on before the Panthers held a sizable 20-15 lead. Owens scored a kill before Cobb returned the favor with a kill of her own.
The Hornets narrowed the lead 20-18 after Hill’s serve hit the net, but the Panthers managed to hold off the Hornets and win set two 25-23.
In the third set, the Panthers continued their momentum as they led 16-8.
The Hornet offense tried to rally and make a comeback. A kill from Willis cut into the deficit to make the score 22-19.
The Hornets scored four consecutive plays, including a kill from Hines and an attack error by Owens.
The set came down to the wire, with the Panthers only a point away from victory and the Hornets needing only two points to claim the set.
Clay served the ball, and Owens would hit the game-winning kill. The Panthers won the third set 25-23 and swept the Hornets 3-0.
