Montgomery man charged in fatal shooting of Moss

A 23-year-old man, on bond in a shooting case, is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Alabama State University sophomore Alexis Moss on Saturday, April 6.

Montgomery police Sgt. David Hicks said William Slater was taken into custody by officers Thursday. He’s being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility with a $150,000 bond.

Hicks said that officers responded to the 2200 block of Spruce Street about 1:10 a.m. in reference to a person shot. When officers arrived, they were told that a woman was driven to a hospital in a private vehicle.

“Police found Moss at the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries,” Hicks said.

While at the hospital, officers found a second woman, who had also been at the residence, who was being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Investigators believe that a large group was gathered when an altercation broke out and shots were fired, Hicks said. The two victims did not appear to be part of the altercation, police said.

Moss died Monday evening.

President Quinton T. Ross, Jr., Ed.D, sent an email to students, faculty and staff announcing the news Tuesday, and reminding them that counseling services were available on campus and in the community.

It’s not the first time Slater has been accused of using a firearm against a person. He was free on a $10,000 bond in a second-degree assault case at the time of the shooting Saturday. According to court records, he shot a man in the left leg and right hand last month.

Slater was charged with third-degree domestic violence in February 2018 after a woman, who identified herself in court records as his wife, wrote that he pulled a firearm and fired toward the ground while they argued. He then allegedly choked her, put the gun in her mouth and to her stomach while threatening to shoot her.

The domestic violence case was ultimately dropped two months later after the woman failed to appear in court to continue prosecuting Slater, according to court records.

Slater was accused of shooting into an occupied home on Hilldale Drive in 2015. A grand jury declined to indict him on the charge.

Moss is the second ASU student to die this semester by gunfire. Her death, marks the 34th homicide investigation for Montgomery police this year.

Jacquez Hall, 21, was killed alongside 24-year-old Justin Martin when gunfire rang out at an event between campus and the Paterson Court housing complex on North University Drive Aug. 15. Three other people were also struck by gunfire.

No arrests have been made in Hall’s and Martin’s deaths.
