Fast-food giant Wendy’s is planning to shutter hundreds of stores nationwide to improve underperforming restaurants and elevate the brand.
Interim CEO Ken Cook told investors on Nov. 7 that the company expects to close roughly 240 to 360 stores, with close to 6,000 locations still operating nationwide.
According to USA Today reports, Wendy’s has faced recent struggles in sales compared with some of its fast-food competitors. In the third quarter, the chain reported a 4.7% drop in same-store sales, revenue generated by locations open at least a year and a 2.6% decline in global systemwide sales.
Will Alabama Wendy’s locations be affected? Here’s what we know.
Why is Wendy’s closing?
Wendy’s says the closures are part of an effort to strengthen the brand and support franchisees. Some locations are underperforming financially or failing to reflect the chain’s standards, according to Cook.
For struggling restaurants, the company may make improvements to equipment or technology, transfer them to new operators, or, in some cases, close them entirely.
