The Alabama State University Hornet football team experienced a huge win against the Rattlers of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University on Saturday in Tallahassee in Bragg Memorial Stadium.
The Hornets embarrassed the Rattlers on their home field with a final score of 42-14 as the Hornets were dominant from the opening drive with senior running back Marcus Harris II running it in for two yards to cap off a 13-play, 75-yard drive to make the score 7-0. The Rattlers tried to drive down the field but were unsuccessful on a fourth-down conversion that resulted in the Hornets getting the football back with good field position.
Junior quarterback Andrew Body had a big run to put the Hornets in a great scoring position. Sophomore running back Jamarie Hostzclaw had an explosive run to put the Hornets in the red zone and set up the four-yard touchdown pass from Body to redshirt freshman receiver Jalen Jones, which increased the score to 14-0. The Hornet defense held the Rattlers to a punt that the Rattler defense forced on the Hornets.
The Rattlers picked up a few yards from their quarterback R.J. Johnson, who had a big touchdown drive led by their running back Thad Franklin Jr., who scored on a four-yard run to make the score 14-6 with the Hornets still on top. To end the second half, running back Jamarie Hostzclaw had a big gain to put the Hornets in scoring position. A costly fumble from the Hornet offense stopped a potential scoring drive to push the lead back up to double digits. Going into the half, the score was 14-6.
To open the half, the Rattlers had a big kick return to put them in good field positioning. The Hornet defense held the Rattlers to a fourth-down turnover that the Hornet offense took full advantage of and scored a 36-yard touchdown pass from Body to Jones to push the Hornet lead to 21-6. After more failed attempts by the Rattler offense to get anything going, they were forced to punt to the Hornets, who returned the ball to midfield. They methodically drove down the field and Harris scored his second touchdown on a three-yard run to push the lead to 28-6.
To end the third quarter, the Rattlers had yet another failed fourth-down conversion courtesy of the Hornet defense. The remainder of the game was one-sided, dominated by the Hornets, with Harris scoring his third touchdown to push the lead to 35-6, a total beat down on the Rattler’s home field. The Rattler finally scored again at the end of the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Miles Campbell to make the lead 35-14 in favor of the Hornets.
To end the game, running back Johnson put the last touchdown of the total beatdown of the game on the Rattlers with a 27-yard touchdown to close out the game. The final score for the game was 42-14.
The Hornets return to action next week, hosting Bethune-Cookman University for Homecoming on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the ASU Stadium.
