The Alabama State University Hornets defeated the Miles College Golden Bears 37-9 on Sept. 14 in front of 18,101 fans to open up the first home game of the season. The Hornets improved to 2-1, while the Bears fell 0-3 on the season.
Hornets junior quarterback Andrew Body had a great game, completing 14-of-16 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Body threw to three different receivers in this game, throwing accurately throughout the entire game. Redshirt freshman receiver Jalen Jones had an impressive game with four catches for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Hornets scored first with a 45-yard field goal from senior kicker Brandon Gilliam to take an early 3-0 lead. The Golden Bears received a few possessions in the first quarter, but they ended their drives with no points on the board.
Body threw 35 yards down the field to Jones to increase the lead to 10-0, with the student section bringing the energy and Johnson jumping in the crowd to celebrate with them. The defense shone, only giving up three points in the first half. The defensive leaders for this game were senior safety Keane Lewis and linebacker Jalil Lenore, both totaled eight tackles for the Hornet defense, with sophomore defensive back Zaquan Patterson having a good showing, totaling six tackles in the game. The Hornet defense gave up a field goal to the Golden Bears, but the offense responded in a big way. Body threw a 61-yard strike to Jones, which opened up the floodgates, and Hornet Stadium erupted as he crossed the end zone. The Golden Bears could not move the ball against the Hornet defense, which resulted in them punting the ball during the next possession.
Body threw a 40-yard strike to red shirt freshman receiver Ajai Harrell, who was wide open and ran into the end zone untouched to increase the Hornet lead 24-3. Miles College did not impress their fan base, having punted the ball six times for 196 yards the entire game.
The last punt of the half from the Golden Bears led to a Hornet score with yet another touchdown pass from quarterback Body, who threw the football to senior wide receiver Dylan Djete, who made a back-shoulder catch from a well-placed pass. Going into halftime, the Hornets were up 31-3 in an electric environment at Hornet Stadium.
The Golden Bears scored their only touchdown of the game in the third quarter off a rush from running back Roderick Thomas on a 2-yard run. To finish the game, the Hornets added two field goals to push the lead to 37-9 to close out the first home game.
The Hornets are back in action against the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Rattlers on Sept. 27 at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
