HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The rivalry between Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University is heating up ahead of the Magic City Classic, but this year, the competition is for a cause that saves lives.
The American Red Cross is partnering with both universities for “Blood Drive Battles,” giving students, alumni, and fans the chance to show their school pride while helping patients in need. The friendly contest will determine which school can bring in the most successful blood donors before the big game in Birmingham.
The blood drives will be held on the following dates, and donors at each event will receive a ticket to the 2025 Magic City Classic:
- Oct. 20 — Alabama State University
Dunn–Oliver Acadome
915 S. Jackson St., Montgomery, AL 36104
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Oct. 21 — Alabama A&M University
Health and Wellness Center Gym
4900 Meridian St. N., Huntsville, AL 35811
10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“The Classic is more than a football game, it’s a celebration of community,” said Annette Rowland, communications director for the American Red Cross Alabama and Mississippi Region. “We’re inviting fans, families and alumni to turn their pride into action by giving blood and helping save lives.”
According to the Red Cross, sickle cell disease affects thousands across Alabama, and some patients may need up to 100 units of blood each year to manage complications. African American donors are especially needed to provide closely matched blood, yet they make up less than 3% of national donors despite representing 13% of the U.S. population.
