Tyfani Turpin initially enrolled with plans to study architecture but was discouraged to find that ASU does not have the program. As a substitute, she decided to turn to a childhood hobby into a formal course of study. Since changing her major to theater, Turpin has developed the closest connection to Brian Martin, MFA, the chair of the theatre department.

Zagora James is an Alabama State University legacy as her mother Dawn James, and brother, Deonte James, are both ASU graduates. James is a native Mobile, Alabama, where she attended Murphy High School. As a dual-sport athlete, participating in both basketball and soccer, she was encouraged to explore interdisciplinary studies to support her career goal to work in sports management.

The Alabama State University Board of Trustees voted to rename the residence hall formerly known as Bibb Graves Hall during its September meeting. The 93-year-old residence hall will now be known as Jo Ann Gibson Robinson Hall. Jo Ann Gibson Robinson was an activist in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Despite her efforts to stay out of the limelight, she was arrested but never tried.

Alumnus Danny Darnell Carr is the District Attorney for the Birmingham Division of Jefferson County since Nov. 27, 2018. Carr previously served as the county’s interim district attorney in 2017 and had been a prosecutor in that office for the past 17 years.
